Media – The Breaking pillar of Indian Democracy

Media is the pillar of the democracy and if someone would have asked me year back than I would have been all of praise for them. It is not because they were taking on Congress or something but I found them to be fearless and really reporting what was correct. But what has changed in last one year?

I feel in last one year media has turned them more into commercial business than the actual journalism. Yes they are here to earn money and not charity but than this business (I feel pain to write it as “business” but that’s how it is) should not be carried with the motto of profit maximization. Sensationalism in media has become a phenomenon today. People want to shout on their panelist and get some mileage. I guess the very word of “debate” and role of conductor in debate has been misunderstood. The journalists who are conducting these debates are not supposed to come out with certain set of mind-set. They are supposed to be neutral, they are supposed to just co-ordinate things and ensure everyone gets chance to speak but on other way in many debates its only journalists speaking and other are listening like some school lecture.

Journalist coming with certain set of mind-set defeats the very purpose of debate. In one of the news channel, a politician was asked about his current government’s achievement. When he replied that government came out with low insurance premium scheme, journalist replies saying “you want people to die” This is the clear picture of journalist coming with mind-set of just nailing the other guy rather than being on right side. Journalist has decided to just blame people but never and ever try to bring any positive things happening across India and Globe. They need to understand that when they are live on channel they are not representing the channel but they are talking and representing 1billion people. I really feel pity on myself and other billion people in this country who has to just see negative news all the time on news channel. Yes there is lot of things going wrong and needs to be reported but are you saying government or not a single person is doing right thing anytime which needs to be reported.

Sensationalism has become the important aspect of journalism. We as a viewer have also promoted this and we should also be blamed for this. Taking things out of proportion is new definition of journalism. Let’s take recent example: The foreign minister helped an absconding Indian to go to Portugal and visit his wife suffering from cancer. Media goes on and questions the nationalism of minister. Ridiculous it is!! She helped His wife and not him but just because there is no news you just created one. The same minister helped lot of people rescuing from different countries like Iraq and Yemen but no importance to it. It’s when we people took it to social media they reported and gave their sometime to such positive news. I can understand they will not give time to such news because than they won’t be able to blame anyone, shout on anyone.  (

We understand it’s not easy to run media and get all those news and also be in profit. We also appreciate the efforts they take. But now you guys have gone too down. Sensationalism and unwanted news have become daily dose. Remember if people can protest against politician, police than you are no different. If you continue to behave the way you guys are, the day is not far when the very people for which you are broadcasting would boycott you. It’s important for you to understand people’s anger over media. At the end a quote from Spiderman movie “With great power comes greater responsibility “I wish media get this and be positive and moralistic toward reporting.

PS. I am sure if I was little bit known personality the next debate would have been how I am against “Free Media” and I belong to a certain political parties having hypocritical views. Fortunately I am not.
